Winds of Winter Irish Cottage & Outdoor Hot Tub
Escape to Historic Authentic Luxury
Perched at over 1000 feet above the Irish Sea on the slopes of Butter Mountain, Winds of Winter cottage is the highest traditional Irish thatch Cottage in Ireland & offers breathtaking views over Tollymore Forest Park, and the surrounding Kingdom of Mourne Mountains - Northern Ireland's only designated National Park . Tollymore Forest Park is an ancient woodland that HBO used to film pivotal scenes such as where the Stark Children found the Direwolf Pups under the picturesque river bridge, and Winds of Winter cottage is the ideal base to explore these magical locations from.
Famous guests of the cottage include George RR Martin. The Irish thatch cottage is easily accessed by car via road and is located on a traditional sheep farm - lost within a wilderness of wildflower meadow, Emerald green farmland & cloud shrouded mountains where your only neighbours are red squirrels, grazing sheep & soaring buzzards overhead.
The traditional wood burning stove and open Mourne Granite stone fireplace keep you cosy warm as you relax to the backdrop of crackling flames, flickering candles and lanterns. And outside let your mind wander as you stargaze from the private wood-fired outdoor hot tub .
Winds of Winter Cottage was originally built in the mid 18th Century and more recently was home to Paddy Grant a skilled stonemason who worked the famous Granite rock of the Mourne Mountains. Skilled stonemasons were in high demand in North America & Pat emigrated to Staten Island in New York to help construct the Empire Estate Building never to return to Ireland.
Nowadays there are very few traditional Irish Cottages left and it is most difficult to acquire them as many are demolished or lie derelict. Winds of Winter Cottage was a piece of local history in danger of being lost forever too and so underwent a sensitive restoration with much of its simplicity and charm of yesteryear being preserved.
A cosy overnight stay in Winds of Winter Cottage (maximum 2 adults) gives great insight into the bygone times of this historic little place, the beauty & remoteness will capture your senses and make it hard to leave this magical relaxing spot.
